I'm new to rye whiskey but I do like this. There are herbal notes you don't get with traditional bourbon. For being 101 proof this isn't hot on the nose or tongue. You can feel and taste the proof and it's enjoyable.
On the nose you pick up fresh mint with a bit of dill. It has a nice sweet note and some caramel. It comes across really well.
On the palate there is the herbal and sweet. Then it transitions to rye spice and pepper. Then you get the oak and leather on the back end. These are all balanced and nothing overpowers everything. On the swallow there is enough hug to let you know it isn't 80 proof.
This isn't a cheap rye. You get quality and taste at a good price. You can tell the skill and care put into this product from the first sip. Nothing dominates the blend. Nothing feels rushed on the age and character.
If you want there are more expensive rye's available on the market. Regardless of price they will have to go a long way to be better. I'm drinking this neat as a everyday sipper. It gives me what I want. A good drink with great balance and flavor without paying a fortune or hunting something allocated for days. If you like rye everyday or just occasionally for a different taste buy this and enjoy!
